I enjoyed researching my DNA cousins on Ancestry.com. However, there are many instances where one is unable to find how a cousin is connected with oneself. This is especially annoying when it is a close cousin. In this case, I had one such cousin contact me, even before she had appeared on my list of cousins. This allowed a breakthrough with one such line I had been exploring for some time.
Charlotte Mary Maslin (1905-1964) was in 1923 living with her parents at 3 Hyde Street, Deptford, when she became pregnant. A male child was born on the 13 April 1923 at her parents’ home.
On the 29 April 1923 she married Herbert John Green at Greenwich.
On the 29 May the child’s birth was registered at the register Office in Deptford East. The child was named Arthur John Green, the father was named as Herbert John Green, the mother was named as Charlotte Amelia (sic) Maslin now the wife of Herbert John Green, a cartage contractors carman. The information was provided to the registrar jointly by H. J. Green, father and C. A. Green mother of 3 Hyde Street D. E.
The registrar seems to be aware that the child was born before the marriage took place by making the comment ‘Charlotte Amelia Maslin now the wife of Herbert John Green’ rather than simply Charlotte Amelia Green. How or why the surname Charlotte Amelia appears instead of Charlotte Mary, as she was registered at birth, is unclear.
Arthur John Green was brought up by his mother and grandmother alone, I was informed by a the grand-daughter of Arthur, so it might be assumed that the marriage of his mother to Herbert John Green was one of convenience to establish some respectability or to provide a father’s name on the child’s birth certificate.
With the coming of DNA research, it has become clear that the father of the child, Arther John Green, is of the Easterling family.
Living just a street away from the home of the Maslin family at 3 Hyde Street in Deptford, lived the Easterling family at 21 Hamilton Street.
Alfred George Easterling and his wife Ellen Harriet (nee Ashby) had five sons.

Herbert Henry born 9 Oct 1902
Edwin born 22 March 1904
Of the above children,
• Alfred Walter is my father, and DNA establishes that he would not have been the father.
• Frederick Charles served in WW1 in the Buffs Regiment and did not marry until 1931 but had no children as far as I can establish, so DNA would be unable to confirm him as the father.
• Harry married in 1924 and had seven children…….
• Herbert Henry died in 1927, unmarried so there are no descendants that could positively establish that he was the father of Arthur John Green.
• Edwin married in 1947 but had no children, so once again, with no descendants, it cannot be positively established if he was the father of Arthur John Green.
The only positive relationship that can be defined is that Arthur John Green paternal grandparents were Alfred George Easterling and his wife Ellen Harriet (nee Ashby).
My research is ongoing.
