Whitecross Street market was a flourishing Victorian market between Old Street and Upper Whitecross Street. In 1861 Mayhew counted 150 stalls here. It was cleared in the 1890's to make way for a housing development. The site is now covered by the redeveloped Barbican.

Notes
Family tradition (I was told) has it that Johannes's family name was Oesterlund, and that his father was a potato merchant in Oslo (?). He had refused to join the family business and so was disowned.
Comment
This seems to be at odds with his father's occupation as a fisherman.
