{1} Morning Post - Tuesday 27 January 1829
JOHN EASTERLING and Co's Superior INDIAN CONDIMENTS, INDIAN CURRY, or MUL:LIGATAWNY PASTE, equal to the Indian Manner.
This Paste is a compound of a variety of spicy and wholesome ingredients, a small portion of which not only gives an excellent flavour to Rice, but produces a superior Dish to any that can be prepared with all the train of seasonings generally used in Cookery.
Sold in Jars, Half-pints 1s 6d; pints 2s 6d; quarts 4s 6d: with ample printed directions for use.
Also Supirior Bengal Chattny, and Chattny Sauce, so distinguished for its peculiar taste and fine flavour, for Fish, Beef, Cold Meat, and Game of every description, etc.
These highly approved Preparations, combining matchless quality, super-piquance, and delicious flavour, have induced many families to express their high approbation, considering them Superior although more than one-third less in cost, to any other Sauce of the kind, and are convinced that one trial therefore will prove the opinion to all parties.

White Cross Street was named after a cross, painted white, which stood outside a house belonging to Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate, in the 13th century. The street once ran from Fore Street to Old Street but the southern half was obliterated in the 2nd world war.
Whitecross Street prison for debtors stood at the corner with Fore Street from 1813 until it closed in 1870. In 1876-7 the Midland Railway Company built a goods terminus on the site, which was also destroyed in the war.

Whitecross Street market was a flourishing Victorian market between Old Street and Upper Whitecross Street. In 1861 Mayhew counted 150 stalls here. It was cleared in the 1890's to make way for a housing development. The site is now covered by the redeveloped Barbican.

In 1812, after various unsuccessful attempts, the Gas-Light and Coke Co. became the first gas company to receive a charter of incorporation to provide light to the city of London, Westminster and the borough of Southwark. It set up its works in Great Peter Street, Westminster. Gas street lamps appeared on Westminster Bridge. Soon several other gas companies, both statutory and non-statutory, were established. Amongst these were the City of London, the Imperial and the Independant north of the river, and the South London, South Metropolitan and Pheonix south of the river, the latter having bought the rights of supply and mains from the Gas-Light and Coke Co.
