In 1812, after various unsuccessful attempts, the Gas-Light and Coke Co.
became the first gas company to receive a charter of incorporation to
provide light to the city of London, Westminster and the borough of
Southwark. It set up its works in Great Peter Street, Westminster. Gas
street lamps appeared on Westminster Bridge.
Soon several other gas companies, both statutory and non-statutory, were
established. Amongst these were the City of London, the Imperial and the
Independant north of the river, and the South London, South Metropolitan
and Pheonix south of the river, the latter having bought the rights of
supply and mains from the Gas-Light and Coke Co.
